"Misunderstanding" - Sarri Plays Down Kepa Mutiny

Image
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has played down goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga's extraordinary act of defiance in the Carabao Cup final, saying it was a "big misunderstanding". The Spaniard refused to be substituted in the closing stages of Sunday's game at Wembley, despite twice going down with cramp. Sarri wanted to bring on substitute goalkeeper Willy Caballero but was left seething when Kepa refused to leave the field. Sarri appeared in a much more conciliatory mood when asked about the incident by reporters after the game. "It was a big misunderstanding,’ said Sarri in quotes published on Chelsea's official website. "I understood he had cramp so I didn’t want the goalkeeper to go to penalties in that physical condition. "I only realised the situation after three or four minutes when the doctor came to the bench. In the meantime I wanted Caballero on the pitch, and the keeper only wanted me to know he was in condition to go to penalties...

"I have five Champions Leagues, you [Atletico] have none." - CR7

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo might have been on the wrong side of the result as Atletico Madrid beat his Juventus side in the Champions League - but the five-time Ballon d'Or winner could not resist having the final word. Diego Simeone's side overcame the two-time European champions 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano through goals from Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin on a night dominated by controversy surrounding the Video Assistant Referee [VAR]. Ronaldo was making his first return to the Spanish capital since his summer move from Real Madrid to Turin. And though Juve were overwhelmed, the Portugal international did not want to leave Madrid with anyone under any illusions as to his brilliance. Walking through the mixed zone after the game he barked: "I have five Champions Leagues, you [Atletico] have none." The 34-year-old won the European Cup with Manchester United in 2008 before scooping it four times with Los Blancos - including twice at the expense of city rivals A...

Pique Slams Real Madrid's Complaints on Refereeing

Image
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique reopened his feud with Real Madrid by suggesting the team act in a hypocritical fashion when it comes to refereeing decisions - whichever sport they play. Madrid's basketball team tasted disappointment on Sunday when they were downed 94-93 by their arch-rivals in the Copa del Rey final. The aftermath of that game, however, was dominated by Madrid accusations that Barca had benefited from several questionable calls which led to their triumph. But Pique pointed out that in scenarios where the Merengue receive a perceived advantage from officials, like February's VAR-dominated 3-1 derby victory over Atletico, no comment is made. "[Madrid's complaints] happen in football, it happens in basketball, at least they don't have any other sports because we'd have to suffer it in hockey and handball too," Pique fired at reporters when asked on the Copa final following Barca's 0-0 Champions League draw against Lyon. ...

Messi's Off-Colour as Barca Held by Lyon

Image
Barcelona slumped to a fourth draw in five matches across all competitions as they were held to a 0-0 stalemate away to Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash. Ernesto Valverde's men were far from their intense best and were particularly wasteful in front of goal, as Lionel Messi struggled to produce the kind of match-winning display many have come to expect every time he takes to the pitch. Barca generally controlled the entertaining first half and created some promising opportunities, but were it not for two excellent early saves from Marc-Andre ter Stegen they could have found themselves trailing. The second half was lacking in intensity, as opportunities became more infrequent and Barca had to be content with returning to Camp Nou for the second leg on March 13 without an away goal.
